Buen Camino

Have you ever watched a movie and said "I would love to do that!" Well that is what happened to me about 18 months ago. I watched the movie "The Way" about a father who walked "The Way" in memory of his son. As soon as it was over I wanted to go walk the Camino de Santiago. The Camino de Santiago is a path that people have been taking for over a thousand years as a sort of spiritual pilgrimage. There are three ways to take the pilgrimage  walk, bike or by horse. Lyn and I looked at walking it one summer but it is the worst time to walk it due to crowds and summer temperatures. So we put it on hold till retirement. Meanwhile I told my Dad to watch the movie and  he was immediately hooked. When he found out you could bike it he put it on his bucket list. Slowly we learned more about the Camino de Santiago and found out that many people walk it in sections over time since the entire path is over 500 miles long. We also found out that if you walked the last 60 miles or biked the last 120 miles of "The Way" then you were considered a pilgrim that had completed the journey. To prove that you have actually made the journey you have a pilgrims passport that you get stamped at various locations along the way. Due to the fact that my Dad has a bad knee we decided to look at biking the last 120 miles. This will have us starting in Ponferrada and ending in Santiago. We are going to take 10 days to ride the route. This is actually more time than we should need but will allow us time to explore the towns along the route. The route will consist of everything from smooth roads to rocky terrain and probably everything in between. We are leaving on Sunday April 17th and should be riding our rented bikes by Tuesday April 19th.  I think we have learned just enough to be dangerous so good vibes and prayers are always welcome!   Buen Camino!
